Does grid-tie solar work in a brownout?
No. A grid-tie inverter has no battery and no output of its own; it feeds the panels’ power into the grid’s 220 V. When the grid drops, it must stop within a fraction of a second (anti-islanding), so the house goes dark with the sun on the roof. Backup in a brownout needs a battery and a hybrid inverter, or an inverter with a changeover.
Pag brownout, may kuryente ba ang solar?
Hindi. Ang grid-tie inverter ay walang battery at walang sariling output; ipinapasok lang nito ang kuryente ng panel sa 220 V ng grid. Pag nawala ang grid, kailangan nitong huminto agad (anti-islanding), kaya madidilim ang bahay kahit maaraw. Para may kuryente sa brownout, kailangan ng battery at hybrid inverter.

Why must it stop? The sun is up.
So that a lineman repairing the line is not fed 220 V from the roofs along it. Anti-islanding is required by the Philippine Distribution Code and by the inverter’s certification.
Can I add a battery to my grid-tie later?
Yes, with a hybrid or an AC-coupled battery inverter that makes its own 220 V and lets the grid-tie inverter sync to it. It is a second inverter, not a plug-in.
Net metering: does Meralco pay me during a brownout?
Nothing is exported during a brownout because the inverter is off. Net metering credits only the kWh exported while the grid is up.
