Registered Master Electrician (RME) board exam reviewer

A general average of at least 70%, with no subject below 50%. (RA 7920). Practise each subject with worked solutions, then sit a timed mock exam and see where you stand against that rule.

Sample questions

1. A 20 m² room is lit by 4 lamps of 2500 lm each. The coefficient of utilization is 0.5 and the maintenance factor is 0.8. What is the average maintained illuminance on the work plane?

  1. 500 lx
  2. 250 lx
  3. 50 lx
  4. 200 lx
Show the answer and solution

Answer: D. 200 lx

E = N Φ CU MF/A = 4 × 2500 × 0.5 × 0.8/20 = 200 lx.

2. A wye-connected supply has 380 V between lines. What is the line-to-neutral voltage?

  1. 658.2 V
  2. 126.7 V
  3. 190 V
  4. 219.4 V
Show the answer and solution

Answer: D. 219.4 V

In wye VL = √3·Vph, so Vph = 380/√3 = 219.4 V.

3. A motor has a nameplate full-load current of 20 A and a marked service factor of 1.15. What is the maximum rating of a separate overload device under the basic rule?

  1. 23 A
  2. 25 A
  3. 20 A
  4. 28 A
Show the answer and solution

Answer: B. 25 A

For motors with a service factor of 1.15 or more, the overload device may be rated up to 125% of nameplate FLC: 1.25 × 20 = 25 A. A 115% limit applies to other motors.

Reference: PEC 2017 Part 1, Art. 4.30 (Motors: overload protection)

4. A continuous load draws 16 A. What minimum branch-circuit rating does the 125% rule require?

  1. 20 A
  2. 16 A
  3. 12.8 A
  4. 24 A
Show the answer and solution

Answer: A. 20 A

A continuous load (3 hours or more) is sized at 125%: 16 × 1.25 = 20 A minimum.
