Try it on the benchThe lab drops it on an empty bench and opens its datasheet card.
Typical part: SMBJ TVS diode
Pins
- Anode
- Cathode (band)
Ratings and limits
| Stand-off | 5 V |
|---|---|
| Breakdown | 5.8 V |
| Clamp | 8.1 V at 74.1 A |
| Peak power | 600 W for 1 ms |
How to use it
Across a supply or data line: invisible in normal use, clamps ESD and surges far faster than a MOV. Pick a stand-off voltage just above the line’s normal maximum.
Lessons and builds that use it
- TVS, polyfuse and protection front end
- 65 W USB-C PD stage on a ready-made 24 V supply: buck converter, PD controller, load switch (build)
- 65 W USB-C PD charger from scratch: mains flyback (UC3844, 800 V MOSFET, PQ2625 transformer), TL431 + PC817 feedback, PD controller (build)
- Real device: phone charger, 220 V AC wall to 5 V USB (build)
